Metal Gear Solid 4 ranting

So, I beat MGS4 yesterday. Or was it today? Well, the cutscenes lasted so long, the date changed in the midst of it lol. Anyways, I have somethings to say about it. This is more for me though, so you can ignore this.

BTW this contains spoilers.

Okay. Well, I have to say that this game was amazing. At first, I was a bit disappointed because so many things, like the controls, gameplay, and most of all, Snake, had changed from the previous three games (I've never played the original Metal Gear Solid, I've only played Twin Snakes...I did, however, take note of the nostalgic MGS1 part though.) In the beginning, I almost felt as if I was playing an entirely new series. But as the game progressed, it just got better and better. It still had it's sarcastic and witty sense of humor that I loved and still love while still managing to be serious, and the depth was as thorough as ever. However, I noticed that there was a crap load of romance in this game, moreso than the others, not the the others had all that much to begin with. But...Naomi/Hal? I'm sorry, but...I don't approve. I did somewhat start like her, and it was somewhat sad when she died, but I was actually glad that she did. I initially didn't like her (didn't hate her though) because of her betrayal in Twin Snakes. But...yeah. One thing though. I do feel kind of bad for the loyal Snake/Meryl fans who have supported since the beginning. I mean, they were practically canon and they've had fans for...almost 10 years now? I don't know, but it's a long time. (btw, this is probably the only time I'll make this concession since I'm a diehard Dave/Hal fan.) I guess most pairings with Snake were pretty much destroyed, but this one mostly because you actually get to see how Meryl somewhat breaks down from it all. But whatever, Johnny's a total hottie. But more on that later. I have one more general point to bring up, and that is...did Kojima have this planned from the very beginning? I mean, perhaps the general outline of the entire story, but with a plot this complicated, there's no way you can have 3 games and one last game that ties so many things together and manage to avoid plotholes. But then again, there are things like Meryl and Johnny's wedding that is like...wow did that plan that since the start? Yeah. So onto the characters.

Sunny - At first, I thought Sunny was a dog, but then I was like "Wait, she can't be because she helped make the MkII." I thought her singing was rather cute, and upon watching the first Mission Briefing, I instantly saw Snake, Otacon, and Sunny as a happy family. If only Snake were young again...

Meryl and Johnny - I've always kind of liked her, even despite the fact that she had a huge crush on Snake in the beginning. In this game, I really began to think she was kickass. When she got married however, I couldn't help but think she looked a bit like a drag queen because she's so muscular. Although there were times when she looked pretty from certain angles. She should have left her hair down though. And Johnny. Oh Johnny, what can I say about you. Even though you were this weak little character who got beat up by Emma and Snake and bowel problems, I've still always adored you. And, damn, I never expected him to be so hot. I'm actually...quite proud of how much he grew as a character, from gag character to a support character who plays a fairly important role. And I really do think these two are adorable together. Oh man, that scene after Snake heads for GW and Meryl and Johnny defend themselves from the soldiers...I was totally laughing my ass off. That was so.....Mr. and Mrs. Smith right there. I love them.

Liquid/Ocelot - Have you ever noticed that when ever Snake says "Liquid", he never says it properly. Rather he has to hiss through his grit teeth and exclaim "LIQUID!" I thought it was kind of amusing. Anyways, when I found out about Ocelot and Eva planning this from the start, I was hugely surprised, and his dedication to Big Boss was touching to me...in a strange way. When Liquid says that he had never meant to stop Snake in the end, and through the whole fight scene, I couldn't help but feel terrible as I watched him die. Learning that they sacrificed themselves as The Boss did was so...well, I cried. One more thing. I think it's somewhat ironic that Snake and Liquid were both old men. I like how it turned out so conveniently.

Drebin - I'm so glad he was there. I always knew he was a good guy, and I've liked him right from the start. His monkey is hilarious. Anyways, I didn't purchase much from him other than a sniper rifle and some silencers which I didn't use...but he was great. His humor in dark times were always welcome and his surprising generosity at times made me like him all the more. He's way better than Sigint in MGS3. Plus, his little speech in the end brought me near tears.

Big Boss and Zero - Actually, I wasn't surprised at all to see that Big Boss showed up. He was still as striking as ever. And his salute to The Boss at the end had me crying right after I'd finally stopped crying after hearing Otacon speak about Snake. And Zero...I thought the whole friendship thing between him and Big Boss was such a sweet thing, and even though he caused so much chaos, it was somewhat touching to see that he did all of that because he was pained by the loss of a friend. Well, mostly...

Raiden - I've always thought that he was such a tragic character. A lot of fans of the series hated him and I couldn't possibly ever see why, considering I really love him so much. He come right after Snake in Otacon as a favorite character. When I discovered that his body fell apart and that he lost Rosemary (as much as I didn't like her) I almost cried. To see that he was reunited with her and his young son (John, right? so cute) I cried out of joy for the man. I thought that it was truly a good ending for him, something that he deserved. Sure, he was somewhat dorky and awkward in the second game, but that's part of the reason I started liking him in the first place. In this game, he matured so much that it hurt to see him. I was sure he was going to die about 500 times throughout the game, and that one time they made it seem like he died, I was sobbing. Then it turned out that he didn't and he still ran in to defend Snake. I was banging my TV screen, yelling at him and what was he thinking. But I'm really happy that in the end, he got his happy ending.

Otacon - Oh Hal. He's grown so much. When I saw the trailer and first saw his face, I fell in love. He was so handsome, but in the game, it turns out he's so much more mature and brave...although he was still somewhat of a crybaby. His ordeal with Naomi really made me uncomfortable, but I still love him. He retained basically the same personality as before but he had become so much stronger, and the whole time I couldn't help but feel so proud that he'd grown up so much since the first game. What really made me feel bad though was that with Naomi gone, even though I didn't like her all that much, Hal has now lost...three women in his life. Sniper Wolf, Emma, and now Naomi. I guess he just doesn't have much luck with women...if you know what I mean? But seriously, he's gone through so much heartbreak, it hurts to watching him hurting over these undeserving women (like Naomi). But truly, out of all of the things in this amazing series, Hal is one of the characters that I'll miss the most.

Dave and Hal (pairing) - During Snake's visit back to Shadow Moses island (which brought back so much nostalgia and memories), when he came upon the locker and they talked about the first time they met, I was having fits. It just made me so happy. It was so cute that Dave is still as gentle as ever only to Hal (not even to Raiden or Sunny), and Hal is really the only one who understands Dave and has been with him since the beginning. Even if I didn't like them as a pairing, their friendship is still so beautiful, and it's the only (close) relationship that had managed to stay standing throughout all four games, a strong one too. From the humorous flirting (about Snake's age and smoking habits...so cute) to their serious moments I loved them. The one sentence that flung open doors holding back my tears was the last thing Hal said about Dave to Sunny: "Snake's lived a hard life. He deserves a good rest." Something along those lines, but it was heartwarming and I cried so much.

Snake - Well, it's been a good five or so years with you, Snake. I have no idea how the hell I got into this fandom in the first place, but I'm amazingly glad that I did. Ever since the beginning, I've admired Snake, more than any other character in any game or anime or movie or any type of fandom for that matter. He's such an amazing dynamic and it was absolutely tragic that he turned out this way. But, as Otacon said, he deserves his rest. Snake has been so strong throughout this entire series, never doubting his work and always fighting because he knows that he's the only one who can. Out of all the characters, he's not the one who lost the most, but he was the one who started out with the least, and what little he had, he'd lost too, but despite that, he always persisted on and I think that's what really made me love this game so deeply. He manages to be so tough on the battle field, but with his friends and allies, Hal especially, he is also capable of being gentle and kind. And sure, he was sexy, when he was young and even as an old wrinkly man he was still pretty hot. In a much better situation, he would have had the perfect equation. Snake is such an awesome character and although I'll be replaying this series for years, I'm sure, I'll still miss him so much. It's been a long run, and I'm glad that I've been here to experience his entire story.
